Open Question: what reason would doctors have to request sperm samples from a 17 – 18yo man?

Recently this guy i know who is only 18 said that doctors requested a sperm sample from him and he found out his sterile, i am now wondering and a little worried why a doctor would see the need to get a sample from a man so young? any ideas?
